Psst.. Joe - Sailors never wear polarized glasses. They cut reflected light which means they cut the ability to see a wind lines on the water. Dark is good but not polarized.

And I too have the Garmin 176C with their blue chip of my sailing area, the Chesapeake Bay. The unit is small and difficult to read in bright sunlight (made even more difficult when wearing polarized sunglasses). The display is small and when mounted on the Port Bulkhead is hard to see when seated on the starboard side with tiller in hand. BUT, I sail in a very easy area and I know the sailing area like the back of my hand. The GPS is used more as a speed indicator. If I were to replace it I would look for a bigger display and maybe one that can rotate to face more toward the center of the boat.
