A woman who gave birth to a baby on a flight from Samoa to New
Zealand and then attempted to leave the child in a plane toilet has
been arrested and charged by police.

The 29-year-old woman gave birth to the baby girl in the aircraft's
toilet, without alerting anyone onboard to the fact that she was
going in to labour.

After the woman left the plane, cleaners found the infant lying in a
toilet bin amid bloodied paper towels.

The mother later returned to the plane, according to reports. She was
taken to hospital with the baby and both were reported to be doing well.

The Samoan woman, who has not been named, faces up to seven years in
prison for abandonment, and the same term for allegedly failing to
inform air officials her pregnancy was so advanced.

Welfare officials are still deciding whether the mother should get
long-term custody of the child.

Detective Inspector Mark Gutry said police would investigate whether
the baby was born in Samoan or New Zealand airspace.

"There are a whole lot of issues around that - the aircraft and were
that is from, where they have come from, where exactly she was born.
So there are a whole lot of issues around that to be addressed," he told NZPA.

The drama took place on a flight operated by Pacific Blue from Apia
to Auckland.
