According to human rights lawyer Ms. Howaida El-Omda the whole
incident started when allegedly a woman lodged a complaint with
Al-Khosous Police Station accusing the Copt, Mr. Maher Fahmy, of
trying to burn down her apartment's door.

When the police could not find him, chief of criminal investigations
Captain Sherif Hossameddin detained the accused whole Coptic family
of five, including father, mother, two of Maher's brothers and his
wife. They were told that they would be detained until Maher comes to
the police station.

They were kept the whole of the night of 10.3.2009 during which they
were subjected to beating until the next morning.

When El-Omda arrived at the police station in the morning, the
elderly mother was completely unconscious and needed medical
attention, besides they were all handcuffed.

She continued by saying that she soon realized that she was not
dealing merely with a regular case of a police complaint against
Maher for allegedly trying to burn down a door. She was informed by
the elderly parents that a Muslim woman, 10 years older than their
son Maher had gone to the Police Chief asking for his help as she is
in love with the already-wedded Maher, and would like to marry him!!!

When lawyer El-Omda could not meet Captain Sherif from 7 am to 2 pm,
and was not even allowed access to the police report, if there was
one, she went and lodged a complaint with the Public Prosecutor, to
speed up the procedures.

Upon her return back to the police station, the Police Captain was
friendly and promised to release the detainees. However, at midnight
she was called back to the police as the three men were only
released, but the two women were still held pending the appearance of
Maher at the police station.

She returned back to the police station and remained with the
detainees until 5am the following morning, to make sure they would be
released this time.

Police Captain Sherif Hossameddin threatened the family that if Maher
did not appear, they might be detained again!!!

Howaida El Omda says "which Constitution or Law gives the right to
detain a whole family of women and men, just because of a report
filed against one of its members, a report which could potentially be
malicious"!!!

El Omda has filed another complaint to the Public Prosecutor to gain
access to police records, which she doubts that one ever existed.

It is worth noting that Voice of the Copts has previously reported
that The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) urged on
24.12.2008, the Public Prosecutor to indict the Al-Khosous chief of
criminal investigations, Captain Sherif Hossameddin, following
credible and consistent complaints of abuses he committed against a
number of men and women from the Al-Khosous town in the governorate
of Qalioubiya, including arbitrary arrest, hostage-taking, unlawful
detention, torture and sexual assault.
