Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)

The big news was the fire yesterday along the wildlife drive south of the
thruway. Nearly 700 acres burned. It was mostly cattails and hopefully will not
affect the impending migration.
4/1: A SANDHILL CRANE was found on Morgan Road. An EURASIAN WIGEON was
seen in the “Coot Pool” on Howland Island.
4/2: A GREAT EGRET was spotted in Knox-Marsellus marsh.
4/3: An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen in Tshache Pool and 2 SANDHILL CRANES
were heard along the Wildlife Trail.
Derby Hill
------------
It was a great week at Derby with ample south winds and record breaking
warmth. The weeks tally was 8,397 hawks. 3,393 were seen on 4/2 alone. Another
BLACK VULTURE was seen on 4/2. Still no Broadwings.
Madison County
------------
3/31: An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on Ditchbank Road north
of Chittenango.
Oswego County
------------
3/31: An EURASIAN WIGEON was refound at Phillipa Point on Oneida Lake.
4/3: 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen at Phillips Point.
4/4: 8 SURF SCOTERS, 2 BONAPARTE’S GULLS, and a RED-NECKED GREBE were seen
at Phillips Point.
Oneida County
------------
4/4: An early CLIFF SWALLOW was seen in Camden.
Onondaga County
------------
4/4: New arrivals EASTERN TOWHEE, CHIPPING SPARROW, and FIELD SPARROW were
all found at Three Rivers WMA.
