Greetings! This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
September 26 , 2011

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     9/29: Over 200 SNOW GEESE including some Blue Phase were seen at 
Knox-Marsellus Marsh along with 16 GREAT EGRETS and 2 SANDHILL CRANES. At 
Puddler’s Marsh SANDERLING, DUNLIN, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were found.
     9/30: 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen at Puddler’s Marsh. The 
AMERICAN AVOCET was seen in Knox-Marsellus Marsh. Large numbers of GREEN-WINGED 
TEAL, PINTAIL, and AMERICAN WIGEON were spotted in Tschache Pool.
     10/1: A SWAINSON’S THRUSH was found on VanDyne Spoor Road. A SANDHILL 
CRANE was at Muckrace Flats.
     10/2: 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen at Puddler’s Marsh. A CACKLING GOOSE 
was found in a large number of Canadas at Knox-Marcellus Marsh.
     10/3: The 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were relocated in Puddler’s Marsh. The 
AMERICAN AVOCET continues there also along with some DOWITCHER species and 
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.


Onondaga County
------------

     9/28: A LINCOLN’S SPARROW and 2 COMMON RAVENS were at Three Rivers WMA 
north of Baldwinsville.
     10’/1: BLUE PHASE SNOW GEESE were seen in the Tully area.
     10/2: A LINCOLN’S SPARROW was spotted along the Erie Canal Trail in 
Fayetteville.
     10/3: 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen in the Syracuse State Fair 
parking lot.


Oswego County
------------

     10/1: A RED PHALAROPE was seen from the bluff at the fort in Oswego. Also 
a group of close to 30 HUDSONIAN GODWITS was seen flying north. That same group 
was seen an hour later flying past Derby Hill.Also seen at Derby were 175 
BRANT. At Sandy Pond MERLIN, PEREGRINE FALCON, and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were 
seen.


Oneida County
------------

     10/2: BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SANDERLING, and DUNLIN were reported from 
Sylvan Beach.


     Migrating Warblers continue to be seen in the area. 12 species were 
reported this week. No Orange-crowned yet.


Extralimital
----------

     A juvenile PURPLE GALLINULE was found injured at Sodus Point earlier this 
week and brought to a rehaber. It has since died. A photo from the rehaber has 
confirmed the identification. I will try to get more specific information this 
week.
