Chris,
Thanks for posting this. I watched radar every evening in the Rochester area.
Early on, it looked great and we appeared to have some good birding mornings
along lake Ontario. But fairly soon, it seemed to me that a long term pattern
set up that the birds were not coming into or were going around western NY -
west over Ohio or Wisconsin maybe? That central corridor was often thick with
radar images when our area was empty with a blocking front of some sort. We've
had some really good mornings along the lake perhaps with birds traveling along
the lake?, but I think I agree with you on numbers now that you mention it. For
the past several years, I could drive the road along the lake and have 20, 30,
40 blackpolls in a 2 mile stretch. Not this year yet. Places inland would be
quite active in the mornings, but I did notice fewer migrants at my nearby park
than in past years, there would be better numbers. (I do admit I did not visit
these as often this year, favoring the lake hotspots.)

These are my theories and thoughts on our area, and really just that. Maybe the
more observations of this nature we share, the better picture we get. it's not
scientific, but still helpful and interesting.

It is interesting to see what Joan Collins reported from the ADK region. And
will be more interesting to see how the numbers add up over time and with more
data collection. Banding station data will also be interesting.

Are past radar images stored where we can access them and compare with ebird
data over several years?

Thanks for sharing this,
