This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of October 19, 2020 Highlights: ----------- MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD RED-THROATED LOON BRANT SNOW GOOSE CACKLING GOOSE EURASIAN WIGEON BLACK SCOTER SURF SCOTER GOLDEN EAGLE SANDHILL CRANE BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER PARASITIC JAEGER RED-HEADED WOODPECKER NORTHERN SHRIKE BARN SWALLOW MARSH WREN ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER EVENING GROSBEAK WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 10/19: A late MARSH WREN was spotted on VanDyne Spoor Road. 10/21: An EVENING GROSBEAK found on Armitage Road Road. Also found there were 7 shorebird species including WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and 6 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were seen on VanDyne Spoor Road. 10/23: 2 SNOW GEESE were seen from the Wildlife Drive. 70 SANDHILL CRANES were seen from VanDyne Spoor Road. 10/25: 49 BRANT, an EURASIAN WIGEON, 4 LONG-BELLED DOWITCHERS and 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen from the Wildlife Drive. A CACKLING GOOSE and 11 SANDHILL CRANES sere seen at East Road. An EVENING GROSBEAK was found on Armitage Road. 10/26: An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on the Wildlife Drive. A late BARN SWALLOW was at the Visitor’s Center. Cayuga County ------------ 10/20: 33 BRANT and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were seen at Fair Haven State Park. 10/24: An EVENING GROSBEAK was seen on Jordan Road north of Rt. 31. At West Barrier Bar Park in Fair Haven a PARASITIC JAEGER, 5 RED-THROATED LOONS, 1 SURF SCOTER, 8 BLACK SCOTERS and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER were all recorded. 10/27: An extremely rare for upstate MAGNIFICENT FRIGATE BIRD was found and photographed at Fair Haven State Park. Onondaga County ------------ RED CROSSBILLS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and now EVENING GROSBEAKS are now being seen regularly at Shakham Road in the Morgan Hill State Forest. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were seen this week at Hamlin Marsh on Wetzel Road, Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse and 3 Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported from Lawrence Road in Marcellus, Temple Adash Jeshurun Cemetery in Syracuse, Oneida shores Park in Brewerton and 3 Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. 10/19: A late MARSH WREN was seen on the West Shore Trail on Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. 10/23: A RED-THROATED LOON was seen at the Liverpool Marina. 10/25: 90 BRANT were seen at Oneida Shores Park on Oneida Lake. 10/26: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at 3 Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. 36 BRANT were seen at the Inner Harbor in Syracuse. Oswego County ------------ EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported throughout the county. Fill your feeders. 10/21: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on Thelma Road in Central Square. 10/24: A CACKLING GOOSE was seen in Oswego Harbor. 2 RED-THROATED LOONS and over 700 BRANT were seen from the overlook at Derby Hill. 10/25: A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen at Bishop Road north of Pulaski. all three SCOTERS were seen from Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. Madison County ------------ 10/24: A CACKLING GOOSE was seen on Woodman Pond north of Hamilton. 10/25: EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder on Borden Road in Earlville. Oneida County ------------ EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported from Clinton, Cassville and Waterville.
