This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of May 16 2022 Highlights: ----------- LEAST BITTERN GLOSSY IBIS PIPING PLOVER BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER STILT SANDPIPER WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER WHIMBREL LAUGHING GULL BLACK TERN WHIP-POOR-WILL RED-HEADED WOODPECKER PHILADELPHIA VIREO SEDGE WREN YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER ACADIAN FLYCATCHER SWAINSON’S THRUSH PROTHONOTARY WARBLER LAWRENCE’S WARBLER HENSLOW’S SPARROW ORCHARD ORIOLE RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 5/17: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at the Audubon Center on Rt. 89. 5/18: A SWAINSON’S THRUSH was seen on Esker Brook Trail. A LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was found at the Visitor’s Center. One GLOSSY IBIS was seen along the Wildlife Drive and remained till the 19th. 5/20: A STILT SANDPIPER was seen at the visitor’s Center. 5/21: A RED KNOT and a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were at the Visitor’s Center. 5/22: PPHILADELPHIA VIREO, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and CERULEAN WARBLER were all found at the forested area of Armitage Road. A LEAST BITTERN was found at the Railroad Road Marsh. 5/23: A WHIMBREL was seen at the Visitor’s Center. Cayuga County ------------ 5/18: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at Fair Haven State Park. 5/19: 3 ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS were seen at sterling Nature Center. 5/22: 2 ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO were seen at the Sterling Nature Center. 5/23: A LAUGHING GULL and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were seen at West Barrier Bar Park in Fair Haven. Derby Hill Bird Observatory ------------ 1,393 Raptors were counted at Derby Hill this week. A majority were BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and TURKEY VULTURES. Other highlights were 130 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS on 5/21 and 4 SANDHILL CRANES and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on 5/21. Oswego County ------------ 5/17: An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER continues at Gray Road south of Oswego. It was heard again of 5/20. 5/19: A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was seen at the Sandy Pond Outlet on Lake Ontario. 3 PIPING PLOVERS continue there also and were still present today. 5/20: A WHIP-POOR-WILL continues at the Roosevelt Road Graver Pit north of Oneida lake. 5/21: 3 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen at the end of Nine Mile Point Road on Lake Ontario. An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen at Peter Scott Swamp north of Phoenix. Onondaga County ------------- A HENSLOW’S SPARROW and a SEDGE WREN continue virtually daily in the big fields area off of 60 Road in the Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. 5/18: A LAWRENCE’S WARBLER (hybrid of Golden-wing and Blue-wing) was seen at Green Lakes State Park. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen at Pratts Falls County Park south of Manlius. 5/20: A LEAST BITTERN was found at the Dewitt Marsh off of Fisher Road and the Hamlin Marsh off of Henry Clay Road. 5/22: A BLACK TERN was seen at the West Shores Trail on the west side of Onondaga Lake. An ORCHARD ORIOLE was found at Green Lakes State Park. Madison County ------------ 5/21: A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen on Co. Rt. 20 north of Perryville. 5/22: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and an ORCHARD ORIOLE were seen on Ditchbank Road north of Canastota. Oneida County ------------ 5/20: A WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard at the Roosevelt Road Gfavel Pits north of Oneida Lake. A SORA RAIL and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK were found at the Dwyer Road Swamp north of verona. 5/21: An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen at the Spring Farm nature Preserve south of Clinton.
