This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of August 01, 2022 Highlights: ----------- LEAST BITTERN BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON RED-SHOULDERED HAWK BLACK VULTURE SANDHILL CRANE WILSON’S PHALAROPE SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER WILLET RUDDY TURNSTONE BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER BLACK TERN FORSTER’S TERN RED-HEADED WOODPECKER SEDGE WREN YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER PINE SISKIN BAY-BREASTED WARBLER Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 8/5: A SEDGE WREN continues at the Morgan Road Marsh and was heard through the 7th. 8/6: 12 Shorebird species including SHORT and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and WILSON’S PHALAROPE were seen along the Wildlife Drive. Also seen on the Wildlife Drive was a LEAST BITTERN. 4 BLACK TERNS were seen fron VanDyne Spoor Road. Oswego County ------------ 8/3: A FORSTER’S TERN was seen at the Sandy Pone Outlet on Lake Ontario. 3 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at the pond on Biddlecum Road north of Phoenix. 8/4: 12 shorebird species including WILLET, RUDY TURNSTONE, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER AND BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were seen at the Sandy Pond Outlet on Lake Ontario. 8/6: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen near Oneida Lake at Constantia. Onondaga County ------------ 8/5: 3 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen Onondaga Creek from Maltbie Street in Syracuse. 8/7: A SEDGE WREN was heard at 3 Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville near where one was found earlier this season. Madison County ------------ 8/2: A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen on the Colgate University bike trail in Hamilton. 8/4: 2 BLACK VULTURES continue at the McDonald’s Restaurant near the Thruway exit in Canastota. They were seen again on the 5th. and the 6th. Oneida County ------------- 8/3: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Verona Beach State Park on Oneida Lake. 8/6: A BLACK VULTURE was seen at an abandoned building on Rt. 46 just south of Rome where 2 were seen numerous times this summer. It was seen again on the 7th. 8/7: An early migrant BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was seen on Lakeshore road near the northeast corner of Oneida Lake. 8/8: A PINE SISKIN was seen on Lakeshore Road on the northeast shore of Oneida Lake.
