I am not sure about what you mean by core configuration.
In real lab I would go in following order and time

1) ASA Firewalls ( 50-70 minutes )
2) IPS ( 40-60 minutes)
3) IOS FW ( 30-40 minutes)
4)Implement Identity Authentication ( 30-40 minutes minutes)
5) Implement Control and Management Plane Security (20-30 minutes)
6 )Advanced Security (20-30 minutes)
7)Network Attacks (20-30 minutes)

That's leave you with minimum 3 hours 30 minutes with 7 sections done or
maximum 5 hours.
In any case, you will have ample time ( 3+ ) hours for VPN, which i suppose
will be the biggest and toughest of all nuts to crack...

Personally i have found it, if i go with the sequence, VPN sections leave me
brain dead :)
And if i get everything out of the way, I am fresher even after 7 sections
and have more time to concentrate on VPN.
