You need to take and pass a written within 24 months but not with the first 6
months of getting a lab or written pass. So if you take a written every 7
months you keep adding 2 years to your cert :-)

So do we know the reality of it all. Is it every 24 months or within 24 months
of expiration? I am going to open a case with the Cisco certification team
just to be 100% sure. I have heard both and it is truly confusing. The every
24 months thing seems to be in question as i took a security written in 2007,
which got me to 2010 and then another one in 2008 which got me to 2012.

My history makes it seem like within 24 months of expiration, but the
documentation seems like every 24 months.
