The restriction on having to use "mode trunk" when using "voice vlan" within a switchport is inherited from older code on the 2750 and 3524. I think for ESW you should use trunk mode (at least for the 16 port ESW). If ever you see line protocol down for the voice SVI then this could be to blame. I would recommend that you use mode trunk for all ESW within the lab.

Hi Bruno, First of all I do not speak for IPX, but my understanding is that the reason for why the vol1 has the old way of configuring the ports on ESW module is because of at the time of when it was written this was the way these ports were configured. I can from my own experience say that you definitely can configure these ports with the access port mode. This is what I did after I realized that this was now supported. But it might be good to practise on both methods, you never know if you will get that as a requirement in the lab.
