Thank you guys, I already have something working. I installed an Ubuntu 12.04 VM, then I added airmon-ng and wireshark and I'm already able to capture some traffic with another USB adapter I have (TP-Link WN821N).
This 2 minutes video shows it all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhKZ60x2vMk I will check the Backtrack option. Backtrack is a Linux based (Ubuntu) distro with pre installed pen testing tools. I run a copy in VMWare Player on my Windows laptop which allows Linux to access the USB Adapter. Primarily Airodump-ng and Airmon-ng can be used to capture 802.11 packets. These can then be opened in wireshark etc. Another useful tool included is airdecap for decoding WPA/WPA2 encrypted packets. The Dlink you have adapter will probably also work so you may get 80211 packet capturing for "free". I want to learn a bit more about the 802.11 protocol and to do that I have OmniPeek 6.8.2 Demo and I purchased one USB supported adapter (the D-Link DWA-160). But the Demo has many limitations and I'm thinking about alternatives. The best I found (affordable) was Airpcap classic: http://www.riverbed.com/us/products/cascade/wireshark_enhancements/airpcap.p hp What do you guys use in your lab preparation or on your work ? I want to be able to use my Windows 7 x64 laptop, I know that Linux is much better and has many options but it's not what I want. Thanks.
