We found that the draytek 2860n plus does what we need. They call the feature
URL Redirect.

I’m still trying to do it with my Asus RT-N10U and DD-WRT but it’s been
difficult to find a stable version that supports my USB 3G modem. The last
build available, dd-wrt.v24-23503_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin, seems stable but in the
other hand it doesn’t leave enough free space on the flash for the JFFS2 stuff…

So do the Meraki APs. Their MX also supports cellular modems via USB.

Thanks,

Thank you for the feedback. I was able to purchase one Asus RT-N10U on a local
store, it has 32/8 of RAM and Flash. It seems there a dd-wrt build with jffs2,
nocat and usb support. I will test it and I will give you feedback about it.

Hi Antonio,

I never had to look for such a solution, so I won't be able to give you an
exact model to work with.

But I used dd-wrt for many years before I could afford to buy some Cisco
routers and Aps ;)

I was using the Asus RT-N16 which comes with 32Mb of flash, and totally
supports USB drive. I was using JFFS and it worked great.

I think the 3G connections were supported with dd-wrt on this router.

You can also look at alternative releases like Tomato mods or openwrt. You can
find lots of modules to install with openwrt but you will certainly have to dig
into the Linux CLI. You need to already be comfortable with this, as the ...wrt
features can require advanced configuration.

Years ago I also worked with a Cisco router to add a 3G connection. It
automatically connected to the VPN connection of my company over the 3G to give
access to internal resources as a backup to the usual xDSL link. But I don't
think the captive portal was supported, unless using an external solution.

Keep us informed of the solution you will find, I'm interested ;)

Hello group,

This is OT but since there are many Wireless experts here, maybe someone can
help me.

I’m looking for a WiFi and 3G router with Walled Garden/Captive Portal/Welcome
URL feature.

The idea is very simple, the clients connect to the WiFi Router and when they
open the browser, they are re-directed to a Welcome page, a pre-defined page on
the Internet. I don’t need the advanced features like authentication, accepting
Terms and Services and things like that.

It seems very simple but I can’t find any router to do this. The best I was
able to find was the dd-wrt software that has a feature called nocatsplash. The
problem here is that the 3G/WiFi routers supported are essentially a few
TP-Link models but all only have 4 Mb of flash. Then the nocatsplash requires
the configuration of a Landing Page. This Landing Page can be hosted on the
router itself using the local file system (JFFS) but this is only possible if
the router has more than 4 Mb of flash or if it supports an external storage
device.

If someone knows a router to do this of some firmware other that dd-wrt that
could be run on the TP-Link TL-MR3xxx routers, please let me know !

Thanks.
