A large variety of codecs is, of course, great for personal use. If you want 
other people watch your movie you have to make it as standard as possible. 
Hence, I made an emphasis that mencoder in linux can produce movies that 
integrate, for instance, in MS PowerPoint natively and flawlessly without 
requirement for download of codecs from the Internet. 

Based on the fact that I have already received three emails that try to 
convert me into using some software that runs either solely on Mac OSX and, 
possibly, can/might be persuaded to run in Windows, I have mixed feelings
1. My original post was worthwhile and people who use Linux programs for 
making frames and Windows/Mac OSX programs for combining these frames into 
movies will benefit from knowing about mencoder.
2. Nobody uses Linux nowadays. Everybody switched to Macs and Windows and my 
original post was useless.
