"Dear Colleagues,
You might have heard, that DESY will reconstruct its 2.3 km
circumference storage ring PETRA into a third generation synchrotron
radiation source (PETRA III) from mid 2007 on. The first beam is
expected for 2009.
PETRA III will operate at 6 GeV and 100 mA. It will be the storage ring
with the smallest emittance (1 nmrad) worldwide. The small source size
will enable extremely small photon beam foci as well as ideal conditions
for imaging in the harder x-ray regime.
The scientific program for most of the 14 undulator beamlines has been
decided.
In the field of biology we will have the possibility of setting up a
station for biological imaging in addition to several MX- and a
SAXS-beamline.
In order to explore the science case for biological imaging at a source
like PETRA III, we are organising a workshop at DESY in Hamburg on
September 11th and 12th.
The aim of this workshop is to discuss the potential of PETRA III for
biological imaging and to compare the expected performance with
complementary techniques like optical and electron microscopy.
Everybody interested in this subject is very welcome to participate
in the workshop and should register on the workshop's webpage:

Looking forward to welcoming you here in Hamburg.
Best regards,
Edgar Weckert (for the organizers)
