Dear all,
thank you for the various suggestions regarding my problem setting up stereo.
Unfortunately, nothing I tried resolve the problem yet. I guess Carsten's
concern about the insufficient power sounds quite convincing. For instance, The
red LED of the emitter flashes when I change the display settings using
ctrl+alt+keypad plus. And somehow it gets a signal from the mouse when I am in
stereo mode. Moving the mouse turns on the LED for a few seconds, then it is
off again.
Klaas, thank you too. Option "Overlay" did not change anything, unfortunately.
I guess the quickest solution is to switch to a Quadro card with 3-pin mini-DIN
plug.
Very interesting to read Julien's comment about dealing with REAL D / NVIDIA ...

If I am not mistaken, the power from the VGA port on some graphics chips is not
sufficient to power the emitter. We had a scenario were we tried to get stereo
to work from a laptop with a FX1400 card (w/o DIN plug) and a BlueLine stereo
enabler and encountered the same problem (under RHEL3 and 4). The solution was
to buy a self powered emitter from Stereographics. Sorry, can't give you the
part number right now, somebody else borrowed the machine, but call
Stereographics, they should be able to help.

I don't know about this particular card, but I assume it's not too
different than the FX1400 (I think). Unlike the SGI's, the emitter is
not on all the time, only when being called. So, my emitter is on when
I run pymol (always for that program), and it is on when I run stereo in
coot, but if I turn stereo off in coot, the red light goes off. I also
believe it is on full time when I run O, but I don't remember right off
for that one (I know it comes on when I turn stereo on). The fact that
you get a red light means you probably are calling it right. Does it go
off in the middle of an application? What do you mean that the red
light comes on sometimes?

I am also having very similar problem, I have been trying to run
Pymol on RHEL4 with an nVIDIA Quadro NVS 285 graphics card, and the
hardware stereo does not work. Since my computer also does not have a
3-pin mini-DIN plug, I have been using an emitter with StereoEnabler
from Nuvision.

Dear all,
I am having trouble setting up stereo on a linux machine (RHEL 4) with
an nVIDIA Quadro FX550 graphics card.
According to REAL D the card should be able to do stereo (using an
emitter with StereoEnabler, since it does not have a 3-pin mini-DIN
plug). My monitor (SGI 24inch widescreen GDM-FW9011) shows the
interlaced stereo image but the emitter does not properly produce a
signal. The red LED of the emitter occasionally lights up, but does not
stay lit. I tried various screen resolutions / refresh rate settings,
none work.
If anyone out there is running stereo on this card or another nVIDIA
Quadro card without 3-pin mini-DIN I would be very curious to take a
look at the working /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
