.... what was the error? Was the .mtz file copied from a Windows
machine by any chance?

No. All these files are produced by various flavours of Unix.
The error was a window that said:
"CCP4i encountered an error when trying to extract the data from
{myfile}.mtz..."
Yes, these are network accounts.
This also occurs in my account, so it is specific to the machine, not
to a user.
