I had similar thoughts a few months ago and ended up going back to DIY again 
with the following result.

I'm not saying it is suitable (indeed the referees have yet to decide) but it 
was done with Libreoffice Draw (poor man's CorelDraw) and lots of Googling! The 
hardest bit is probably the Bezier tool for smooth curves!

Maybe we could have a collection of drawing program templates that people can 
use and adapt for their own topologies.
