Microvaxen in general have reduced instruction sets, as specifically sanctioned
by later versions of the VAX architecture manual. ELAN was designed for small
machines and real-time applications, sort of like RSX-11/S. It was used in the
LPS40 laser printer, for example. Some people felt that ELAN wasn't a good
enough small real time system and pushed the notion of "RT-32"; I don't think
that ever went much further than buttons handed out at DECUS.
