There’s probably a shell script floating around that does a good job of making 
the keyboard work correctly when using an xterm.  I think it’s called vt100.sh. 
 Though the last time I tried to use it was on a Mac and the xterm wasn’t 
compiled with the necessary options.

These days I use SecureCRT.
