I had troubles with crashing sessions when the machine could't lookup the output of hostname(1) either in DNS or in /etc/hosts. Network settings are always worth verifying. Also, try to start CDE via startx-command in some non-X11-runlevel (startx /usr/dt/bin/Xsession).
