Apparantly, the way PulseAudio is started differs from distro to distro. But generally speaking, I fail to see how this has to be a job of the login manager. When I started gnome-session (Gnome 2) from a pty in rulevel 3 (before I added my user to the "audio" group), PulseAudio was working without problems. But as I said earlier, I don't have much of an insight into the workings of PulseAudio (It seems it's just a daemon, but there's so much more going on...)
