You've probably rediscoved an old Xorg bug (affects the X version in 
Lucid and Squeeze).
There are patches for MWM and dtwm, but I'm not sure if they ended up anywhere
in particular.
I think that on my (pretty stale) github mirror, it's in the "lucid" branch.
Said mirror should be
git://github.com/idunham/cdesktopenv
if I'm remembering right.
