There are a lot of differences. DVD-ROM, DVD-R & DVD-RW are a faminly that
behaves similar. Similar low level format, 300 inner diameter...

They are all approved DVD-Forum formats.

DVD+R and DVD+RW are completely different. The inner diameter is 24 mm,
DVD+RW is different from DVD-ROM and DVD+R is different from DVD+RW.

There is only a single DVD+R/RW manufacturer while DVD-* is currently made from
three independant manufacturers.

As the DVD+R drives are not yet available, so DVD+* is in the first generation.

DVD-* is available since nearly 5 years and currently the 4th generatin is
sold.
