Thanks very much for your replies, it's a long night and very surprised to find
this load of information, running hard to digest.

>Correct, but this could also be a result from a drive that does not like the
>media because it is impossible to read the ADIP correctly fro whatever reason.

isn't adip only found only in dvd+r(w)?,

\ A plausible
\explanation would be that a previous burn run
\of the same image converted the media into a
\closed DVD-R with the same size as the image.
after the first two failures I was using -dummy option all the way long with a
blank new disk,

also, for your information, I've been successful in blanking the dvd-rw with a
blank=fast command, (did'nt dare use =full least permanent damage), I don't
know if this means anything.

\The OP would need to give additonal information as his first mail mentioned
\a medium that was flagged by the drive as Unformated or Blank Media.

what kind of information? I was using blank dvd-r and dvd-rw, the rw is later
written to in cd creator, and then blank using blank=fast, the output seems to
be the same to me, should I post all the results?

\How does the recordable side of the media look
\like ? Is there a visible difference between a
\broad inner ring and a not too narrow outer
\ring ?

the toasted ones do have the ring you described, but after -dummy option, the
disk is kept blank.

\This may also be caused by Gnome options about media, where an option is
\selected to auto-mount certain types of media and the mounter needs to
\check the device every so often and see if there is a media and what
\kind it is, you can get a "seek zero, read" in the middle of a series of
\writes, resulting in an attempt to write over an already-written sector.

After a failed attempt to write, I find the system is longer seeing a blank
disk
until I manually remount the disk, so it is not very likely that the system is
continuously checking the drive and causes problems.

\Doesn't "Current: DVD-ROM" mean this DVD-R has already been written to?

Sorry, may be I have the wrong output posted, but other than these lines the
others looks alike to me. the output with cdrecord recognizing dvd-r is here:

wow, it looks like from some documents for elites, where can i find it? and
can i fine tune cdrecord so it won't be too specific on medias?

what should i do with hald and O_EXCL ?

much thanks again
