There is no magic included. Others have been doing this for decades. As for the serial ports: the most convenient way is to use terminal servers (aka console servers aka device servers). Just google... When looking for a low cost solution, have a look on ebay, too - at the moment you can bid for about 15 Avocent Cyclades TS3000 48 Port Terminal Servers - yes, these are old, but you get 48 serial ports for less than 200 bucks or so... Also well worth checking for: Lantronix EDS16 / Lantronix EDS16PR As for the remote power solutions: there is a ton of technology available off the shelf - from high end commercial stuff (like Lantronix SecureLinx SLB Branch Office Manager Console Server, combining 8 serial ports with 4 switchable power outlets and an 8-port Ethernet switch) to low-cost do it yourself solutions. If you need just a limited number of switchable power outlets, look for example into the GEMBIRD SIS-PM SilverShield (4 switchable power outlets controllable over USB; web/telnet interface through Free Software - see sispmctl); if you want something that scales well from just 2 or 3 power outlets initially to several hundrets, then you can for example use radio-controlled sockets like the FS20ST (see for example http://www.elv.de/fs20-st-3-funk-schaltsteckdose.html - sory, in German only) which can be controlled through FHEM software (http://fhem.de/fhem.html). Just look around, ther eis litarally tons of solutions for all kinds of requirements and budgets...
