Title: If you don't read the newspaper you are uninformed, if you do read the newspaper you are misinformed
I like it too, I just think that the resistance in the soccer world to having the same points system as American Football would be large, if not insurmountable. A goal of something other than 6, a "field goal" of something other than 3, and the extra point being an extra 2. Matching exactly is just too obvious...

I support Billy's ideas.  I think they are brilliant.  Let's have soccer be more like football.  You get a whole new dimension of strategy.  Although, as David points out, it would be a hard sell.

Careful now, the soccer "purists" will be after you. :-)

Great concept. How about six points when it gets in the net, a one point bonus afterward

if there is a free kick from X distance into the goal ? Each team would have the option

of kicking the ball over the goal from mid field for 3 points. If a player  for a team

with the ball happens to fall down behind the net, or gets tripped up, 2 points

Yeah, that might be worthwhile.

I like your idea :-)

As difficult as it is to score, you would think that the goals would be worth more.

Spoken like a true American!  And, nope, I don't have any idea if there is such a thing as a high scoring game in the World Cup.

( 1 )  Does anyone know the percentage of World Cup soccer games

where the score is not 1-0 or 1-1 or 2-1 ?  Is it greater than 2 % ?

( 2 )  Does anyone know of a more pointless ( pun intended ) game ?

Just thought I'd ask
