We see the same phenomenon here in the states -- and not just in the IT
world.

I'm a career changer (8 years as an Electronic Warfare Officer flying
RC-135s in the USAF) who, like many others, had to invest a few years to do
well financially in IT. It required a huge investment in time and effort to
realize my goals. I know this is a sign of me getting older, but it seems to
me that too many less experienced people, degree or no degree, expect to be
instantly gratified with healthy salaries -- despite having limited or no
real-world experience. Of course you do occasionally run across someone who
doesn't have a lot of real-world experience who can command a high salary.
