Right on mom! And an early Happy Mothers Day to ya! I remember the good 'ol
days when I saw dad undo his belt - I knew what was coming. Whew, he would
really sling that thing. And you know, I think I'm a better person today
because they disciplined me the way they did. Now, my parents didn't beat me
endlessly. They used a variety of methods to get through my thick, rebelious
head. But at least they were there and spent the time with me and taught me
right and wrong. Kids will be kids and they're going to do wrong - you can't
prevent that. But you can instill in them a sense of morals and values that
will get them through the rough times.
I remember one time when my parents found out that I was having sex with
this girl. They drove me to the girls house and I had to look the parents in
the eye and tell them that I had defiled their daughter. How embarrasing! Of
course, that didn't stop me. But I sure as hell was a lot more careful the
next time. :-)

i would like to add something to this, as a mom i see this one all the time
in many of my children's friends...
many parents today are confusing discipline/punishment for abuse and have
resigned themselves to allow their children to run amok versus being
labelled as an abusive parent....people are just not telling their kids "No"
anymore...
if a kid grows up never having constraints at home (ie: never hearing NO)
then how prepared are they for the disappointment of real life? not very in
my opinion...
this type of up-bringing just instills to the child that "hey, i don't have
to be responsible" as they were never really made to face any consequences
of their actions....

I know I was being a bit extreme but I actually do think things _are_
different, even just 4 years ago. Again, I see it as a whole 'culture' of
lack of responsibility, and I _do_ think it's gotten worse.
