That compares apples to oranges though. For that comparision to be accurate, 
  you must say that people getting life sentences have 0 court costs. I bet 
most people getting a life system appeal just as vigorously as those getting 
the death penalty.

To be accurate you must compare:

average court cost + cost of average execution

vs

average court cost + cost of average life imprisonment
