Just because our lives are short doesn't mean to say they're not precious...
Each life (human and non-human) on the planet enriches us and we are
diminished every time one of those lives is extinguished. Whether it's a
person or a beetle or a rattle-snake, they all matter imho.
If you really want to be pedantic then human lives do have a value, take
yours for example: There's the quantifiable things you do which add value to
society in monetary terms and also the people who's lives you touch which
also has a value.
