I should have mentioned at some point a long the line ... a book I highly
recommend is "The Conservative Mind" by Russell Kirk. In the '50s it was
really a seminal book on conservative philosophy. It really helped me
understand TRUE conservativism better and helped me realize I was, indeed, a
conservative.

Of course, I don't think true conservatives are much represented in U.S.
politics today. The Republicans tend to be pretty much big government types,
at least when it comes to pushing their own agendas, and intrusionist in
personal lives, etc.

I don't have any muffins, but I can toss some kudos Howard's way.

Howard,

I haven't taken the test you guys mentioned, but I have no doubt that I
would fall in the liberal square on any test without a Libertarian bias
to it (although my first exposure to the Libertarian platform was in
2000, and it seemed very appealing, at first blush). And yet, I find
that your thoughts on taxation, obligations, and moral responsibilities,
etc. mirror my own. If I recall correctly that you characterized
yourself as conservative, I find the similarity of our views more
encouraging than surprising.
