First off, Eric -- good post. As always, articulate and well reasoned.

Just a couple of points:

Which president ran up the largest debt?
A) Ronald Reagan
B) George Bush
C) Billy Carter
D) Bill Clinton
E) Lyndon Johnson

If you answered A, you win the prize. Mr. "Make Government Smaller" spent
more, created more government jobs and added more regulation than any modern
president. Every budget he proposed called for more spending than the
Democratic budgets. During the so-called Go-Go '80s, real wages for the
average working family actually declined. The only modern president who has
seen wages actually go up during his terms was Bill Clinton, who is also the
only president since Ike to actually reduce federal spending and reduce the
size of the government.

But the Republicans don't want to talk about that. They just want to talk
about the position of his zipper and wet cigars.

The tax refund was a huge mistake. It will have minimal impact on the
economy, while causing us to borrow more money and preventing us from
reducing the debt.

Frankly, I've been disgusted for the last several years with both the GOP
and the Dems when it comes to deciding what to do with surpluses. There is
only ONE reasonable, thoughtful, mature, _conservative_ option -- and that's
to pay down the debt.

Don't give me "the Dems" will only spend the interest rate saving BS. It
takes two to tango and nothing gets spent in Washington without both parties
going to the dance.

Bush did a good job on the Stem Cell issue. A nice, moderate approach, which
is what was needed. I can't believe he came up with idea on his own, because
he's an idiot.

Having said that, I do believe he won Florida fair and square -- even though
his party made every attempt to steal it without a fair count (no fair count
was done before the results were announced, but independent counts since
have shown Bush would have won anyway).

Best,
H.
