I never really got into some of his books but Snow Crash and Diamond Age
are a must read. As for the girls training, it works for her as she's young
and has no pre-conceived notions of programming. If I wanted to follow the
same path and logic I'd probably fail as I'd have to unlearn things. On the
other hand, if someone wrote up a 'learn programming' game in that vein,
I'd buy it for my kids in a heartbeat.
As long as we're looking at cyberpunk type books, keep an eye out for a
book called True Names by Verner Vinge. This is a fantastic work and
introduced cyberspace a few years before Gibson (Neromancer). Oh, and look
for stuff from Rucker like "The Hacker and the Ants" and Headcrash. Both
are excellent and I can tell you from first hand, the description of the
corporation work environment in Headcrash is totally true.
