They had armour at that time. The problem was is how much. During the
supposed time of the Trojan wars, not a lot of metal was used for
protection, latex perhaps, -- pardon wrong sort of Trojan.

Anyhow, Troy, in the Iliad, occurred about 1200 BC. While there was some
bronze armour, Bronze is a very heavy and expensive metal. It was much more
suited to swords or axe heads. So at the most, the vast majority of people
involved in a battle may have a shield with some bronze facings, and
possibly a bronze helm. Other than that perhaps a tunic.
