If you're not wearing a lot of protection a big shield has a lot of
advantages especially if you're also trying to poke the other guys with a
large sharp stick (i.e., a spear).

That said, from what I remember from my military history classes, the
typical way of doing battle in the pre-classical Greece was to allow the
champions to beat the crap out of each other first. Then if your champion
won everyone on your side would charge the enemy, who would usually run away
at that point. If your champion got the crap beat out of him, your side
would usually run away while the enemy would charge.
