That is definitely the government getting into morality.
It seems that this country is still suffering from its beginnings. Most of
the early colonies were religiously inspired - i.e. the Puritans first
colonizing Massachusetts for instance, or Maryland being founded as a
Catholic colony. Ever since that, various religious groups have tried to use
the law and government to steer the nation down its desired pathway.
