Actually the writings of St. Augustine did advocate war under very strict
and limited circumstances. Also throughout the Middle Ages war was promoted
by the church, 4 separate crusades outside of Europe, and 3 within the
bounds of Europe. The Reformation was one entire long war, from Martin
Luther (read some of his writings on the topic, real scary) through to the
beginning of the 17th Century. Even recently in Nigeria there's a religious
war happening, with catholic priests and protestant pastors/ministers
advocating a religious war. In Indonesia the rebellion in the Maluku Islands
and the Aichia province (pardon my spelling) is entirely based on religious
conflict between Christians and Muslims, with the religious clerics of both
sides openly advocating warfare against the other side.
