Come to think of it if the VFAT is wiped out the disk is pretty well unusable.

You can try to do a chkdisk on it and see if it will rebuild the VFAT but if
not, you may not even be able to re-format it.  The alternative is either the
trash can, or if it has really valuable data, then pay some forensic outfit the
big bucks to do a sector recovery.

If it will re-format, then it means it rebuilt the VFAT, and you can then
re-install (if you have the original CDs) Win 98 and be able to use all your
peripherals.
