My 14yo "fooled around with it" and the drive is now working in the newer computer. He can't however tell me specifically what he did.  I do remember being woken up for a discussion of jumpers and controllers; I remember telling him that yeah, it could go on the same ribbon as the CD-ROM... hmm. Have to say I am impressed.
