So, I'm a hardware newbie. I really, really don't like opening my machine. I
have a machine I'm no longer using. It has a good 30 or 40 gig hard drive in
it. Can I just deattach the ribbon from the... circuit board I assume, take
the drive, set it to slave, attach the ribbon to my existing hard drive on
my current computer, and be done with it? I also assume I'll have to connect
power somehow.

This doable? Easy? Something I should avoid as a clueless hardware guy?

I only ask because my nice external 120gig drive has, over the last two
weeks, starting making .... noises... odd noises... and I'm pretty sure this
is a sign of its impending doom, so I want to copy files off of it in case
I'm right.
