lol maybe they will *gasp* throw a HD into that puppy so you won't ever need a memory card unless you are taking your games elsewhere ;>

I think that's a matter of taste - personally I think that the dual shock is
the pinnacle of game interfaces.  The cube's controller is next best
(although not nearly as good) with XBox a distant last (in my opinion!)  ;^)

However I still long for the days of my TurboGraphix 16 (PC Engine) when you
could control all the console functions (reset, power, etc) from the
controller. although annoyingly the T16 had the shortest controller cord in
  history.

But in general I wouldn't look to any severe controller redesign as the
system will be backwards compatible with the previous two generations.

  However I wouldn't mind seeing:

  1)       The above mentioned reset and power on-the-controller.

  2)       Full wireless support throughout (although they probably won't do
  this)

  3)       I've always thought some interesting things could be done if the
analog sticks also turned.  Not as freely as the old 2600 paddle
controllers, but something like that could be neat (of course if would have
to be subtle enough not interfere with the x/y control).

  4)       I really like how the Pelican Wireless controller staggers the
shoulder buttons - so much more comfortable.

I like the idea of having the memory card slot on the controller as well,
but am not sure how it would work out (since I want wireless as well and
there's only so much juice to spare).

I do think that they should just go to memory stick and have only one
"legacy" memory card port.  However then I would REALLY want the ability to
emulate older-model cards on the stick (one 32 meg stick could have 4
emulated PS2 cards on it say).  But I really want to emliminate shuffling
  memory cards from my life.
