People enter into civil marriages for a variety of reasons. Mostly the same reasons people enter into religious marriages. Love, commitment, kids, joint home ownership, etc.

The main difference is "who" is doing the marriage (priest, jotp), what "authority" the marriage is seen as falling under (state, God), and what benefits/responsibilities the marriage entails.

Most religious marriages are also civil marriages, as the couple normally also files papers with the state.

There are, however, religious marriages that are not also civil marriages, as in the couple never files for civil recognition, usually due to the marriage not falling under the rules for a state-recognized civil marriage.
