So Jerry,

on the one hand you admit that Marriage as a religious isntistution between a
Man and a Woman has existed for the last 2000 years.
And you have also gone on to point out that for centuries Marriage has been tied
to several Religious connotations.

However in your final analysis you posit that Marriage today is nothing more
than a civil union.

I'm having difficulty resolving the evidence you present, with the conclusion
which you draw.

There is obviously deep Traditions, and most of them religious, surrounding
marriage.
This portrayed quite clearly by your statement :
Marriage - religious union between man and woman. 2000+ years old
Marriage - religious union of multiple woman to one man (old Mormon practice,
among others) 150+ years old

So for at least 2,000 years Marriage has the Tradition of being tied to
religion.
That is the reason for the debate, and the National discussion.

The problem is that marriage has multiple meanings AT THIS TIME in our society's
history and law.

Marriage - religious union between man and woman. 2000+ years old
Marriage - religious union of multiple woman to one man (old Mormon practice,
among others) 150+ years old
Marriage - civil union between man and woman. 100+ years old
Marriage - civil union between two people. 10+ years old

I think you are about 100 years too late to put this genie back in the bottle.
Marriage by civil ceremony are the overwhelming majority of marriages in this
country at this time. So if you were to take the "standard" definition for
marriage today in our culture, it would be a civil commitment ceremony
recognized by the state, not a religious ceremony of any sort.
