I think they should, but I don't think they can. :)
I think any resolution they choose (even if they choose the right(tm)
resolution) will piss off somebody. If they strip the legal privileges
afforded to married people all-together, they'll piss off the married
people taking advantage of them. If they change the legal term to
"civil union" they'll piss off religious types who're married to the
word married. If they allow homosexual marriage with name and
privileges, they'll piss off religious types who believe that
homosexuality is a sin.
It's a no win situation. Not that it needs a winner.
I'm suddenly reminded of the line in the Last Unicorn "there are no
happy endings because nothing ever ends".
