Leave the institution of marriage alone AND give gays equal rights under
the law.

That would be a good resolution for me.

----------------------------

It is been propose a couple of times on this list that state and federal laws could all become "civil unions" or some such wording, removing the institution of marriage completely from the state and return it the religion.  Then there would be two separate options for couples to express their comment to each other.  One, they could get the state "civil union" license and this would confer civil and legal benefits to the couple.  Secondly, they could have a religious "marriage" ceremony and what types of couples that could do this would be between them and their church of choice.

This would allow couples to get married but not bother with the civil license if they choose not to do so, or vice-a-versa, or both.  Now, we just need to convince our elected official that this compromise is the way to go.  Apparently, as reported on this list, when a Republican legislator in Massachusetts suggested such a compromise he was soundly chastised by his party.

That is one of the things I feel is wrong with modern American politics, business and life in general.  We have become a "winner takes all" society.  Compromise and cooperation are ever more seen as "selling out" and/or loosing; In My Humble Opinion.
