assume that your enemy is at least as intelligent as you are. Not talking
about something because it might "give them ideas" simply makes you
unprepared for when they invariably hit upon the same idea.
I heard the same reports: and still the only thing criminal, so far, is that
the passport was faked (having a South African passport is legal - but
having a fake one isn't). Her circumstances were certainly suspicious and
her arrest was completely warranted - but she hasn't yet been
convicted/charged with anything else (as far as I've seen).
(As an aside $7,000 is a lot of money, but not an enormous amount. Illegal
aliens often, since they can't open accounts, often carry all of their money
on them.)
Lastly you might want to reconsider your cell-phone option: during an
emergency it'll be nearly impossible to get a call through. If you're that
close you might want to consider investing in a good set of walkie-talkies.
The better ones have ranges of several miles and pretty good voice quality
and the really good ones can even be paired using encryption keys.
Satellite phones are, in theory, the best way to go, but they're flaky, huge
and enormously expensive.

1. This was part of the plot from Threat Matrix, shown about a year
back or so. Yes, we tell the terrorists how best to defeat us.
2. The reports I heard on TV said she had a one way ticket to NY, 7k
in cash and a South African passport.
3. As I said before, I do expect an attack in NY and I fear it more
than ever. I'm now working 3 blocks (short blocks) from the Garden.
I'm walking to work daily with my passport as picture ID. I'm about to
transfer the HoF phone number to a cell phone so I can keep in touch
no matter what.
