With a nation at war and the economy still recovering, the 20 highest-paid
leaders of San Antonio's nonprofit agencies received an average pay increase,
including benefits and salary, of 7 percent in 2002.
All the executives made more than $200,000, and the average wage was $386,759,
according to the San Antonio Express-News' third annual survey of nonprofit
executive compensation in San Antonio.

The nonprofit executives surveyed make more than triple the $119,580 average
annual wage for a chief executive in both private and public industries in the
San Antonio metropolitan area for 2002, according to the U.S. Department of
Labor. And they earned much more than the average annual wage for all workers of
$31,260.

For heading up Global Evangelism Television and Cornerstone Church, the Rev.
John C. Hagee brought home the biggest paycheck for a nonprofit head in San
Antonio, at $1.2 million for 2002, down 3 percent from 2001. The nonprofit's
revenue dropped 3 percent, from $18.3 million in 2001 to $17.7 million in 2002.

The second-highest paid, J. Dan Bates, president of Southwest Research
Institute, received $692,897 in 2002, the same as a year earlier. The
institute's revenue climbed 5 percent, from $319.9 million in 2001 to $336.6
million in 2002.

The third-highest earner, John R. Brazil, president of Trinity University, made
$646,842 in 2002, up 46 percent from 2001. Trinity's revenue dropped 4 percent,
from $88.6 million in 2001 to $84.9 million.

United Way of San Antonio's president, Howard J. Nolan, got one of the biggest
pay increases � 35 percent in 2002, bringing his total salary to $287,701.
United Way's revenues dropped 9 percent, from $34.1 million in 2001 to $31
million in 2002.

Tobin Endowment paid its co-trustees, Bruce Bugg and Leroy Denman, $295,580 each
in 2002 � and they receive additional compensation from the Tobin estate. The
Texas attorney general launched in investigation into the Tobin Endowment in
January.
