Hehe :) in this instance I told them, rather indignantly, that I went
to the library because I read books and so do my children :) By then I
was talking to a supervisor and he was if anything rather amused.

I am not totally sure what the criteria are in cases of Canadian adult
+ American children... I know it always boiled down in our case to the
fact that I could demonstrate that I was their mother and that I was
Canadian, therefore they are also Canadian. If they wanna be.

As for child protective services, ya, been there, done that. It
happens. They do go away if they are found to be unsubstantiated. If
this is not possible because of the nature of the allegation or
because the parent is not very articulate or convincing, yes, they can
stay around. And maybe this is as it should be, not sure.

Sorry - I didn't think you were questioning my memory - it was just a way to
introduce the little story.  ;^)

I think that it may be pretty easy nowadays for petty enemies to make false
reports that haunt you forever.  I'm not sure if that's what happened to
you, but if somebody reported it then they might have known you.

This used to (and I suppose still does) happen a lot with social services:
people wanting to screw over somebody would make false child abuse reports.
Although the reports were false and without grounds they would stay on the
persons records for years causing trouble down the line.

I was not questioning your recall, cause I think you are right. Just
noticing and wondering about a difference. As for the Canadians...
they seem very firm about not wanting any parental abductions ;) but
they were always very courteous and professional.

I was however a bit stupefied once that I was asked in the Sault why
my car had been at the library so much lately...but that was probably
someone's paranoia. Sault Ste Marie is a pretty small town and New
Mexico probably seems pretty exotic when it turns up right next to a
river which is also an international border. I guess someone reported
it as suspicious :P________________________________
